Linggou Fm

Period:
Triassic

Age Interval:
Early Triassic, T21, (TJ76)

Province:
Shaanxi

Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located at Linggou, Chengjiachuan, Zhenan, Shaanxi. It was named by the tenth Geological Survey Group of Shaanxi Geological Bureau in 1966.

Synonym:

Lithology and Thickness

It is a set of grayish green-yellowish brown calcareous and sandy shale, mud-bearing microcrystalline limestone and calcareous mudstone. Lower part is light gray-green argillaceous microcrystalline limestone intercalated with calcareous sandstone. Middle and Upper parts are dark gray calcareous mudstone intercalated with calcareous sandstone, argillaceous microcrystalline limestone, and the middle part contains a set of oncolite and stromatolite limestone. Its thickness is about 700 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Shallow-marine marl

Age

It was discovered a set of sandstone and calcareous shale with a thickness of about 800 m above the Lower Triassic of the type section, and they believed that the age may be the Middle Triassic (Jiang Chunfa et al. 1963). The tenth survey group of the Shaanxi Geological Bureau (1966) named this set of strata as Linggou Formation and determined the age as the Middle Triassic. The Shaanxi Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources (1989) assigned its age as Early the Middle Triassic. This book follows it. In addition, Zhu Zhizhi and others (1984) thought the strata should be “Group” rather than “Formation”.
